Anglo-Saxon cloisonne brooch. Circa 10th-11th century AD. Copper-alloy, 10.37g. 35.54 mm. A highly decorated piece detailed with pellets and filigree scrolls, most of the thick gilded surface survives intact. At the centre is a circular panel filled with blue, green and yellow enamel forming a stepped cross pattern.
This disc brooch of Early-Medieval date finds parallels in the cloisonne enamel brooches examined by Buckton (1986: pp. 8-17), with the central setting finding particularly close parallels with his numbers 11 and 14. This group of brooches are identified as having a distribution centred on the south-east of England and as being a particularly English product with influences from European (Byzantine/Germanic) gold work (Buckton, 1986: pp. 15-16).
