Roman anthropomorphic bronze knife handle. The handle has a cylindrical body terminating at one end in a human head. The head is of native British/Celtic 'moon head' style with lunate profile, prominent chin and lentoid eyes. The hair is swept back over the head with a parting down the centre and the eyes are filled with blue enamel. The lower end of the handle terminates in a hand which grasps the remains of an iron blade. A very unusual and charismatic artefact which dates to the 1st - 2nd century AD.
