Silver Hawking Ring. Circa 16th-17th century CE. Lewis and Richardson Type C.i. Formed of a shield-shaped plate and circular loop. The face of the plate is engraved with the image of a greyhounds head erased facing left and wearing a collar. Above are the letters 'LRR' engraved in Roman capitals. The loop is plain and uninscribed. Recorded on the PAS database: ESS-EEFDDE.
The letters LRR suggest the most likely owner of the vervel was, Lord Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, (May/June 1587 – 19 April 1658) was an English naval officer, politician and peer who commanded the Parliamentarian navy during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. A Puritan, he was also lord of the Manor of Hunningham. He married Francess Hatton of the manor of Hunningham in 1605. The greyhound, crest of the Greville family was bestowed on the hall at Hunningham by the former Lord of the manor, Lord Greville Earl of Warwick. The crest on the vervel along with the letters LRR strongly suggest that Lord Robert Rich addapted the crest after his marriage to Francess Hatton.
