Iron Age trefoil fob dangler. A copper-alloy pendant or 'dangler' dating to the late Iron age period c. 100BC -AD100. The flat sub-circular head is in the form of an openwork trefoil, an interesting variation of the more commonly seen triskele design. Areas of both the front and back are recessed and may once have held enamel. The fob is surmounted by a circular suspension loop joined by a short collared stem. 27mm x 25mm, 13.7g.
Fobs or danglers are a poorly understood artefact type, and may have been hung from items of equipment, personal apparel or harness decorations (Jope 2000, p. 285). Jope, records 17 known examples of danglers and related 'hangers' from Britain, while Macgregor (1976a, pp 37) records nine know examples of triskele-decorated fobs from the British Isles.
