£45
Romano-British Dragonesque Brooch. Circa, 1st century AD. Copper-alloy, 4.46 grams. 32.63 mm. An unusual type with three circular cells in place of the more elaborate enamelled patterns seen on many brooches of this form. This example fits in to, Hunter's (2010) class B4a, a non-enamelled, zoomorphic brooch with scalloped decoration radiating from the central boss. The brooch has matching terminals at the head and foot, each shaped like a zoomorphic dragon or beast head with ears sloping backwards and a scrolled snout.
