An Impressive Large 16th century Royal Purse Bar. Early Post Medieval copper-alloy purse bar belonging to Ward Perkins' Class A2, c.1450-1550. Both sides of the bars arms are decorated as is the central boss on one side (presumably the front). The image is that of a young Edward VI in Tudor garb, executed in champlevé niello cellwork. The portrait is flanked by the letters V and I. The decoration along the arms consists of a Latin religious phrase within a simple border, also executed in nielloed champlevé cellwork. A heavily abreviated version of 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM'. This translates as 'Hail Mary full of grace may the Lord be with you'.
