Late Iron Age / Roman bull's head mount. Circa 1st-2nd century CE. Copper-alloy, 30x36mm. A vessel mount in the stylised form of a bull's head with short horns and a long face. Between the horns at the top of the head there are a series of incised lines that represent hair. This form is categorised by Ellis as Bovine Group 10, category 3. Ref: Comparable bovine mounts have also been found in excavations, for example at the Welsh legionary fortress of Usk, Manning 1995: 198/fig. 53, no. 14. The naturalistic elements of the example we have here suggests an early-Roman date, c. AD 43-200. Other examples, with more stylised Iron Age traits, are illustrated and discussed in Stead, 1996:56 and Jope, 2000, plate 173, e-h & plate 166.
