£120
Roman pewter Aesica brooch. Circa 1st century AD. Lead-alloy, 44mm, 14.2g. A rare surviving example with the triangular fan bow of the brooch being decorated with two stag deer with antlers facing one another, above is a human male head facing front with his hands holding each animal by their neck. The imagery probably has religious symbolism. An example of this can be seen in, Ann Ross's book, Pagan Celtic Britain. p.335. Ref: Hattatt's Ancient Brooches. p.310. fig.169. Recorded as UKDFD 1076.
