Anglo-saxon quoit brooch. Circa 5th -6th century AD. Copper-alloy, 9.07g. 36.57 mm. An annular brooch with a wide frame decorated with punched decoration. The outer and inner edges have a border formed of punched crescents, each enclosing three pellets. Between the inner and outer borders the surface is covered with lozenges, each enclosing a series of squares. Traces of the iron pin are still visible around the pin hole. Opposite the pin hole is a V-shaped notch for the pin to pass through; the edges of the V each have a raised border or flange to stop the pin slipping back through the notch. This flange or 'stop' is the characteristic which defines this as a quoit form (Ager 1985, 1). Ager's type 52 (1985, 46). The reverse is undecorated. Ref:  MacGregor and Bolick 1993, no. 10.1.
