Medieval Dagger Quillon. Copper-alloy, 60.45g. 63x20mm. A late Medieval dagger guard (quillion). The hilt has an oval central block with a hole for the blade tang and three quillons at 90° angles. The central quillon bends forward to be parallel with the blade and expands into a pelta-shaped terminal. The flanking quillons have rounded cross section and are waisted with six bevelled facets, flaring to round, flat-ended terminals. The entire piece has decoration in the form of rows of short slashed lines.
This is a long lived form of dagger, with the earliest examples dating to the 13th century. They appear to have been most common between c.AD 1450-1550. Published examples of quillon-daggers are illustrated in Ward Perkins (1940, p39-42, plates VI-VII).
