Charles I Shrewsbury Pound. 1642. Silver, 95.88g. 51.48 mm. King on horseback left, plume behind. CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRA ET HIB REX, five pellets. R. Declaration, RELIG PROT LEG ANGL LIBER PAR, between two straight lines, XX mark of value with three plumes above. 1642 below. Ref: Brooker, 796. Plate LXVIII. A die match to this published example. Spink 2917.
Due to this example being under weight we have conducted XRF analysis on the coins surfaces, obverse/reverse/edge as well as two other samples, a Tower half crown and an Oxford half crown. The tests have shown the composition of the Shrewsbury pound we offer for auction to be consistent with our test subjects, as well as published results: see, BNJ; 1991. Edward Besly and Michael Cowell. The Metrology of the English Civil War Coinages of Charles I.
The specific gravity has been measured at 10.14g, which again was consistent with measurements of a Tower halfcrown (10.14) and two Tower shillings (10.25 & 10.05).
Full details are available on request and will accompany the coin after the sale.
