Post-Medieval portable pocket sundial. Circa 17th-18th century. Composed of a circular ring with a central recessed groove, perforated in two places with long slots. The sliding section would move around the slot, the single hole would have been aligned on the calibrated markings allowing the sun to project through the hole and tell the time to an accuracy of around 10 minutes. The slot is flanked by the initials of the months of the year, in groups of six arranged to either side: 'I F M A M I' to one side (for the first months of the year) and 'I A S O N D' (for the later months of the year) to the other side. The inner face shows two bands of numbers, reading from left to right above: 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 and below: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. Copper-alloy, 40mm x 12mm, 19.2g.
