Medieval gold iconographic signet ring. The hoop has a moulded ropework pattern divided by a circumferential beaded line. The line is bifurcated at the shoulders before framing the bezel in a manner which echoes the clawed setting of contemporary gem-set rings. The shoulders are sub-triangular in section and each has a pair arched panels displaying iconographic engravings. The four panels depict Saint Michael, Saint Christopher, the Holy Trinity and Madonna & Child. The raised circular bezel is deeply engraved with the figure of a facing lion and the blackletter motto either side appears to read ‘du:vie’, French for ‘of life’, all within a circular beaded border.

Although the present ring is unique in its design, similar 15th century signet rings are housed in the British Museum, one example was discovered within the Fishpool hoard (deposited c. 1464) and another is from the site of the Battle of Towton (1461).

The ring is in very fine condition although some wear is evident on the bottom of the hoop and at the shoulders. Small traces of enamel remain within the design, the scheme of which appears to be black, white and green. 26mm x 12mm, 16.3g. Ring size: UK T+1/2, US 9.75.

Originally purchased from the European art market c.1986 and acquired by descent from the vendor’s father.
